Join us to view this curated exhibition, inspired by Jack B. Yeats, of works from The Ballinglen Arts Foundation Permanent Collection, highlighting contemporary artists whose work continues the tradition of drawing inspiration from the North Mayo landscape. A visit to the west of Ireland in 1898 inspired his first solo exhibition Sketches of Life in the West of Ireland. Published by The Ballinglen Arts Foundation and Museum to celebrate this important artistic legacy, David Connolly’s book Jack B. Yeats In Ballycastle and North Mayo documents Jack B. Yeats' connection with the area, featuring many images of his work inspired by the region and details his visits dating back to 1899. Exhibition of Drawings of Ballycastle from 1974 by 4th Year Architectural Students (1973-74) of the Department of Architecture, College of Technology, Bolton Street, Dublin 

Studies of Balla, Ballycastle and Killala were carried out by students from the Department of Architecture at the College of Technology, Bolton Street, Dublin in 1973/1974 further to a request to the Department of Architecture from An Foras Talúntais and Mayo County Council. Writing in 1974 J.J. O’Keefe Head of Architecture hoped that the Exhibition would ‘be of use to the community and their representatives and officials in the preparation of detailed plans and that the participation of ordinary people in the formulation of proposals for the development in physical terms of their environment’ and would ‘lead to a fuller appreciation of their immediate surroundings and appreciation also of the significance of each village in the overall landscape.’ Join us to explore the exhibition which had been archived at the Ballinglen Arts Foundation by founders Margo Dolan and Peter Maxwell for decades and provides a record of the facades including proposals for potential developments in Ballycastle.

Dr Freddie O’Dwyer was an architectural student in Bolton Street when he was asked to lead the small group that surveyed Ballycastle. He later obtained a PhD in architectural history (TCD) and an MSc in spatial planning (Bolton Street). Although retired from practice he still writes on architecture and conservation.

Book of References is an exhibition of research work carried out by Aidan Conway, MarMar Architects into the built environment of County Mayo

The book of references is composed of a number of structures, buildings and spaces from within the county of Mayo. Mapping their location. Surveying them. Analysing their construction, their form and their relation to the landscape (physical, historical or by toponym). 

There was also an opportunity to take advantage of modern computational methods in order to carry out these surveys in immense detail. Through photogrammetric surveying Local surveyors Kilkelly Geo Spatial Solutions have guided me in the technical skills involved in composing 3D point cloud models of each Building/Structure/Space.

These detailed point cloud scans form the basis for a series of analytical and exploratory drawing and model studies of the subject. The scans led to a more careful looking at each structure, and in doing so prompted new ways of viewing, understanding and portraying them. The point cloud scans themselves have remained some of the most fascinating and the richest products of the study to date.
