Exhibition of Drawings of Ballycastle from 1974 by 4th Year Architectural Students (1973-74) of the Department of Architecture, College of Technology, Bolton Street, Dublin
Studies of Balla, Ballycastle and Killala were carried out by students from the Department of Architecture at the College of Technology, Bolton Street, Dublin in 1973/1974 further to a request to the Department of Architecture from An Foras Talúntais and Mayo County Council. Writing in 1974 J.J. O’Keefe Head of Architecture hoped that the Exhibition would ‘be of use to the community and their representatives and officials in the preparation of detailed plans and that the participation of ordinary people in the formulation of proposals for the development in physical terms of their environment’ and would ‘lead to a fuller appreciation of their immediate surroundings and appreciation also of the significance of each village in the overall landscape.’ Join us to explore the exhibition which had been archived at the Ballinglen Arts Foundation by founders Margo Dolan and Peter Maxwell for decades and provides a record of the facades including proposals for potential developments in Ballycastle.
Dr Freddie O’Dwyer was an architectural student in Bolton Street when he was asked to lead the small group that surveyed Ballycastle. He later obtained a PhD in architectural history (TCD) and an MSc in spatial planning (Bolton Street). Although retired from practice he still writes on architecture and conservation.
