Castle Ellen

  • Castle Ellen Athenry, Co. Galway Eircode: H65-AX27 GPS Location: 149246, 232162 (map)

Castle Ellen is of architectural and historical importance, featuring an impressive Ionic and Doric portico and classical frieze. Historical home to the Lambert family, the house also has connections with the political heavyweight, Edward Carson and literary genius, Oscar Wilde. There is a possibility that they met there many years before fate brought them together in one of the most famous trials of that century.

Today, Castle Ellen is the home of Mr Michael Keaney, a man who is devoted to this house, putting much work into rescuing it from ruin since he purchased it in1974. While still a work in progress today, Michael has saved this house from the brink of ruin and has preserved many wonderful original features, such as decorative plasterwork and joinery.
