Achill Amphitheatre talk with Archaeologist Micheal Gibbons
Join us for a informal talk about the Achill Amphitheatre with Archaeologist Michael Gibbons in the festival Printworks Gallery, Galway.
The Open-Air Theatre on Achill, commissioned by Major D.J. Freyer and designed by Noel Moffett was built in 1941. Hosting musical and theatrical performances its stepped tiers could accommodate 500 people. Long since abandoned and reclaimed by the landscape the study aims to identify its remnants and explore them through a musical performance. Michael will lead us on a site visit to discuss the history of the site, its people and the theatre itself.
Former Co-Director of the Sites and Monuments Record Office at the Office of Public Works (OPW) and a prominent expert on the ritual, pilgrimage landscapes, and coastal archaeology of western Ireland Michael Gibbons is a renowned Irish field archaeologist based in Clifden, Connemara, County Galway.
