Join us for a talk at the Red Sandstone Quarry with Dr Benjamin Thébaudeau as part of the Architecture at the Edge festival of related events that will run in parallel with the Mayo Atlas Work by Aidan Conway Exhibition at the Printworks Gallery, Galway.

Coinciding with the Mayo Atlas Work by Aidan Conway Exhibition at the Printworks Gallery, Galway, Architecture at the Edge with Mayo County Council invites you to a site visit commencing at the Red Sandstone Quarry with Dr Benjamin Thébaudeau. Red sandstone and its conglomerates are a common building material in areas of south and north west mayo particularly to the north of Clew Bay. This coastal quarry provides a cross section of materials formation, erosion and extraction. Dr Benjamin Thébaudeau will guide us on a tour of the site to discuss each of these (attendance to quarry visit at participants’ own risk, appropriate footwear recommended)

Dr Benjamin Thébaudeau is the geopark geologist for the Joyce Country and Western Lakes Geopark based in Tourmakeady which achieved UNESCO Global Geopark status in 2026. He has a background in Physics, a MSc in Geophysics and completed a PhD in 2013 at the Department of Geology, Trinity College Dublin.
