Galway City Council have been engaged in a vernacular survey and research over the past year in North Galway City in the townland of Ballindooley, which has been part funded by the Heritage Council.
Following on from this, Galway City Council have commenced Phase 1 of a Vernacular Heritage Survey of Menlo, a vernacular settlement to the north west of Galway City.
The survey will focus on revisiting and resurveying dwellings that were recorded by UCD Architecture students in the 1940s. The survey will utilise these drawings and mapping, which are held by the National Museum of Ireland, as a baseline to undertake the reassessment of Menlo’s vernacular heritage.
As part of the vernacular heritage survey process and in line with the spirit of this year’s AATE festival – ‘Le Chéile – the Architectures of Belonging’, the Galway
City Council Architectural Conservation Officer and the appointed vernacular consultants will host a community event to gather information on Menlo’s vernacular heritage.
