Summer School 2022:
Field-Work

What is Summer School?

Initiated by Architecture at the Edge, Summer School is an ongoing outreach, education and research project; inviting architects and designers to develop their participatory community engagement skills and experience within a rural context.

The Summer School is open to anyone with an interest in architecture, design or construction/ place based research, based in Ireland. We are looking for participants to engage with the local environment through observational studies (walking as research), the study of found objects and to create interactions between communities, landscape, and nature. We are giving participants the opportunity to explore new ideas through research and making in a unique environment. The programmes are led by a cross-disciplinary group of international tutors and professional technicians and leading towards a collaborative design & build project.

AATE is interested in engaging the local community and young people through making, learning from sustainable and local building techniques, working to create structures which are accountable to the environment. The Summer School’s methodologies emerge through extensive research, community workshops and conversations with design experts. This methodology provides a platform for facilitators, visitors, guests, and the local community to creatively test ideas together.

  • DESIGN WEST: JUNE 26 - 03 JULY 2021

  • FIELD-WORK: MAY 07 - 04 JUNE 2022

Supported by an Arts Council Project Award, the summer school programme empowers local communities in the west of Ireland to self-organise.

Summer school 2022: Field Work constructed an 'outdoor classroom' on the grounds of Kylemore Abbey for a local Scout Group.

The workshops/ conversations were hosted by AATE and took place at ATU, Connemara in the village of Letterfrack, at the base of Binn Ghuire, Diamond Hill, and onsite nearby at the Kylemore Abbey Estate.

The project briefs were developed by Peter Carroll, A2 Architects with Mark Arigho at Arigho Larmour Wheeler Architects.

The workshops were delivered with the support of AATE Design Lab Ambassador, Ciara Coogan.

  • Summer School 2023 will be announced at the end of 2022.
