‘After an egg was eaten, the shells were crushed or thrown in the fire as otherwise it was believed that they would become the home of the fairies.’
This talk is about the history of collecting and blowing eggs together with a reflection on an how we house our domestic animals how they have impacted our human settlements for millennia.
In particular the are looking at the relationship of the hen to the cottage when hens historically were kept indoors at night for protection and warmth: they were primarily minded by women and after the commodification of eggs through the “dirty egg “ campaign in the 19th century and the loss of access to market for women , the pin money. It tells a story of the impact of modern farming practices, that separated women from land and animal husbandry. The proposal is built on theme of the authors research of the impact of the milk on Dublin , in this work the attention is drawn to the egg. A special commissioned Fairy Nest by Joe Hogan will be displayed and a There will be a talk on the changing architecture of the hen and the history of both the Sidhe and hen in mythology in Ireland. This event marks the start of year of egg blowing by the architect, where she will return nest year and build with a thousand eggs a Fairy palace.
Workshop : People are welcome to come in and exchange with the artist what they would expect to find in eggs as fairy houses and what they know of the Sidhe , there will also be demonstrations on how to blow eggs, with some egg carving.
